Srta. Michelle Watts, Sr. Alvaro Cortes, Spanish teachers at Lithia Springs High School, and Sra. Yasmin Medina Castano, wife of Sr. Cortes and Spanish teacher at Turner Middle School completed the International Master’s Degree in Spanish Language and Culture at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain, this summer during a three-week stay. "This has been one of the most enriching, rigorous, and adventurous experiences of my life," said Sr Cortes.
The online program provided a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the Spanish language and its culture. It covered a wide range of topics, including the origins of written Spanish, historical and cultural influences, grammar, spelling, and language mechanics. Additionally, it offered valuable insights into various teaching and learning methodologies, along with best practices for lesson planning and classroom execution.
In addition to the three-week stay in Salamanca, one of the most enjoyable aspects for the trio was the exploration of Spanish literature. They especially appreciated the poetry readings and the study of literary masterpieces such as Don Quixote de la Mancha and the writings of clergy and other classical authors. These readings not only deepened their appreciation for the Spanish language, but also offered a richer perspective on its historical and cultural significance.
The program provided a 360-degree view of the Spanish language and culture. "It helped me better understand where our language and traditions come from, how they have evolved, and the importance of preserving and passing this knowledge on to future generations." said Sr. Cortes.
This immersive experience allowed the teachers to connect academic study with real-life context by visiting the places they had read about and discussed throughout the year. They had the incredible opportunity to experience the warmth of the Spanish people, the richness of their cuisine, and the vibrancy of their culture—while continuing to learn from their passionate and knowledgeable professors. "I achieved a life-long dream by earning my master’s degree in Spanish History and Literature from Pontificia University in Salamanca, Spain. My time abroad living the culture, connecting with the community and native Spanish speakers from different Spanish-speaking countries, and experiencing life as a true local was a priceless journey that I will never forget," said Srta. Michelle Watts.
Their experiences in Spain will lead to enhanced student outcomes by incorporating authentic materials, personal anecdotes, and a deeper cultural context, that will make a more relevant and exciting classroom.
